What is sustainable photography?

Sustainable photography is not about whether the photographer chooses to charge their camera batteries + power their computer with renewable energy or drive an electric car.

what is sustainable photography

It’s about YOU choosing to hire locally.

Not local to you, but local to the subject to be photographed, whether it is a building or an event.

For example, your company is based in the South of England and has worked on a project in Scotland. It certainly isn’t sustainable photography to hire a photographer local to you in the south of England to travel hundreds of miles to the site in Scotland. It is not financially prudent either as the photographer switches from hourly to daily rates, as there will be a lot of travelling. They may even need to stay overnight, and they will pass these costs onto you.

The size of the photographic carbon footprint will be even greater if you don’t need just one site visit for a case study, but you require multiple visits over a long period. Then the distance that the photographer travels to the site starts to add up.

As construction becomes more sustainable and hires workers from the local area, why not choose a local photographer?

In addition to the reduced costs and being more sustainable. Here are four more advantages of hiring a local photographer.

They can take photos at different times of the day.

Buildings and lighting look at their best at blue hour. The sky is dark blue, not black, just after sunset or before sunrise.
A local photographer can take photos during the day and night. You don’t have to pay them to wait for the light to change. The local photographer can make two separate visits.

A local photographer has local knowledge.

If the photographer is from the area, they will have local knowledge. They will know the path of the sun, so they know when the building will look at its best.
The photographer will know viewpoints and angles of your building that someone from elsewhere wouldn’t.
