Background information about these offshore wind farms
Neart na Gaoithe is an offshore wind farm 15.5 km off the coast of Fife. It comprises 54 turbines which can generate 450 MW or enough for 375,000 homes. The electricity will be transported by undersea cable to Dunbar. The towers will be assembled at the Port of Dundee. Once the jackets are in place, the blades, nacelles and towers will be transported from Dundee to the site. The base of operations for the completed project will be at the Port of Eyemouth.
Seagreen will be Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm, 27 km off the coast of Angus. The first phase comprises 114 turbines which can generate 1,075MW of electricity (enough for 1.6 million homes, two thirds of the homes in Scotland). The electricity will be transported by undersea cable to Carnoustie, then along 20 km of underground cable, to a substation near Tealing. This cable has to pass under the East Coast mainline and the dual carriageways of A90 and A92. The wind farm towers are being assembled in Hartlepool. The base of operations for the completed project will be at the Port of Montrose.
