Dundee Railway Station Construction Photos

Here are a few construction photos of Dundee Railway Station / Sleeperz Hotel in Dundee.

Dundee Railway Station/Sleeperz Hotel cost £38 Million. It was the first hotel/railway station built in the UK for many years. Not only does the building feature a large arch, but it has a curved exterior.

The atrium in the archway houses the station concourse with the ticket office. The arch is not in the centre of the building as it is directly above the railway tracks below. It is vital to support the weight of the 120 room hotel above.

Old Dundee Railway Station

The old Dundee Railway was a rather ugly building. I didn’t take many photos. It also shows one of the raised walkways that linked the Railway Station to the city centre. It was demolished in 2013.

The location of Dundee Railway Station caused problems as the railway line passes beneath it. They assembled the steel framework in two large sections. The two giant cranes lifted them into place.

By November 2016, the steel framework was broader but more intricate, with some floor sections in place.

The intricate steel framework of the supporting arch is quite visible in this image.

By March 2017, the framework was complete. Scaffolding surrounded the steel frame.

The exterior cladding is more apparent in this image.

By September 2017, the process of removing the scaffolding had begun.

By October 2017, windows are in place. They have removed the majority of the scaffolding. Workers used the remaining section to access the different floors and the roof. They used telescopic handlers (telehandlers) for lifting materials instead of cranes.

Works have dismantled all the scaffolding with only a few windows and sections of cladding missing.

With all the scaffolding gone, workers use cherry pickers to access the exterior. The new exterior lights are visible. Glass covers the entrance to the railway station atrium.

The view from Dundee Law with Dundee Railway Station, RRS Discovery and the V&A Design Museum, the curve of the Railway Station is quite clear.

In June 2018, while workers installed planters and pebble seating, it was possible to walk on the pavement.

With the planters in position, workers filled them with soil and planted small trees. Storms that winter battered the trees. So supporting posts were later added to keep them upright.

The exterior of the Railway Station looks almost complete. Though the Earl Grey Building behind seems to need a bit of work.

The view looks much better at night when lights illuminate the sign, arch and walls.
